Ok. So I've never been to a recital before, and i will be attending one in a few weeks (THE PARISH, Austin) and i was wondering how people typically behave for the recitals. Namely, do you dress up and to what degree? I mean no one wants to upstage the band, but ya know, to sort of set the mood.
Btw, anyone else gonna be in Austin at that recital? |

i had a lot written, but i deleted it to simply say: don't. actually, i'll provide you with a little more -- elaborate costumes will block views, hit people, break, etc., and you will be a laughingstock. this is not a lady gaga concert.
costumes that are unobtrusive (that is, no fucking HATS or fucking WINGS) will bode better than the aforementioned.
good luck, in all cases. |

no costuming. don't disrespect the work of the band like that and treat it like some halloween show -- the audience is not supposed to be the spectacle. not saying that you would be! not trying to be mean either! i've just wanted to say something about this for a long time. rasputina is not a rennaissance fair. neither are they some atrocious steam-punk voltaire-'goth' outfit.
dress as you would normally dress or perhaps a little nicer. i've seen people wear some really laughable cyber-goth tripp outfits to rasputina shows and it was pretty appalling. melora doesn't need her inventive, intelligent career to be surrounded by that kind of thing. that blurt-online article she wrote really shows you how brilliant the work she puts into her work is.
in the documentary, melora says she was really flattered and thrilled when she saw some fans doing the 'native-american' type make-up she did. that kind of stuff is cool, but please don't overdo it.
but as i said, dress like you normally would, and if you can, just a bit nicer.
have fun at your recital -- it'll be a lovely time. _________________

| Yea I dont want to detract from the band or anything, just a question that I asked out of curiosity. I can understand people making a spectacle of themselves and dear god I think that people who wear those stupid fairy wings look like they want to be six year olds. Just an innocent question, but its a topic that probably needed to be discussed |

I normally wear jeans and a t shirt because I'm lazy.
This halloween I'm going to be dressed up in wings but only because I'm dressing up as Cthuhlu and it's a zombies concert. |

I just listened to the Fearless radio podcast, and I have to say, Melora didn't sound the least bit insulted or bothered by people dressing up for Rasp shows. I don't see why fans shouldn't be able to participate in the atmosphere and fun and pageantry, myself, and besides, it's fun to dress up. I really don't see how it would be disrespectful to dress it up a bit, do a little costuming, etc., although common sense should be the guide (i.e. no hats/other view obstructing wear). Why look normal when you aren't going to see a normal band? _________________ I like them slightly misbegotten. |

| Some guy last night had one of those old style masquerade-masks on, a brown top-hat, and an old-style suit. He was amusing to look at but not flat out ridiculous. If you wanna dress up maybe choose something low key. |

Maybe this is an East Coast thing but dressing up is encouraged. Obviously don't be rediculous and wear a Yo! Gabba Gabba styled costume but try and get into it. The bands enjoy seeing their fans in all sorts of expression, especially if its done tastefully in an avante garde fashion which is consistent to the band's overall theme.
Its sad that you don't see much of it these days and that its apparently frowned upon because back in the hay days of Rasputina, the Dresden Dolls, Switchblade Symphony and Jack off Jill these things were celebrated.
The idea that Melora would be offended is rediculous. Melora maybe a diva, but she is not a prima donna.
I can just see her in her dressing room: "Oh my god... they dressed up... how dare they upstage me?!!? I cannot possibly go on! (applies front of left hand to forhead and looks up at the ceiling)" _________________ "I'm the new Jan Brady!" LOL! |

| I think dressing up is what makes it more fun too and the band can also respect this!! Good not to look bad for such a good show!! I also feel they deserve a tip!! I wish I could afford but I am already saving up so next time I can give them such a good tip for the show they put on. For my last show I usually never wear makeup but I wore beautiful green sparkly eye shadow. Also in 2005 I found a corset and wore!! So fun!!! |
