Hot topic we haven't talked about for aWHILE on the board but how do we think we should conduct ourselves at recitals. Some I've been to I'm surrounded by people who treat it like its some sort funeral and any display of remote enjoyment of the spectacle is greeted with hostility. Then others are a grand ball of a time. People dancing and singing and I've even had the unfortunate chance to witness a group of people ...."moshing" to 'Transylvanian Concubine', 'Hunters Kiss' and strangely enough.... 'the olde headboard'.
I've also had the unfortunate pleasure of seeing hippies and goths waft about in trance like movements as if they're the fuck'n Oracle of Delphi.
And of course we're all aware of those precious few who are at every Rasputina recital that they end up getting trashed and heckling Melora to take her top off. And if its not them then theres always two or three women who shout marriage proposals at Melora or other female members of the band.
And then my favorite! Whenever Melora has a question and answer session (or even if she doesn't) there is always some idiot who got into Rasputina like last week and only owns 'Thanks For the Ether' who shouts "WHERE'S JULIA!?!?"
With the exception of the moshing and the wafting the silly questions I generally try to go with the flow.
How do you treat a recital or how do you feel people should act at a recital? _________________ "I'm the new Jan Brady!" LOL! |

I've never attended to any recital, since I don't live in the US. But I have some idea that - I think - applies to any occasion: if you sincerely respect the band, you'll end up adopting a conduct that does not affect negatively the concert.
Like, with Rasputina, I probably wouldn't make a sound during a song, because I'd so desperately want to pay attention to everything the band do. But I'd show interest and enjoyment, cause I think it's pretty frustrating for a performer to notice the audience looks bored, or that the audience couldn't care less.
To me, the main thing is respect. |

| Annoying: when people shout unsolicited requests for songs during a Melora monologue, especially when they can't even name the song title correctly. I recall someone shouting for "Antique Dainty Doll Shoes" or something to that effect once. |

oh you're kidding, right?
I haven't encountered those ones yet, I thought it was pretty much common knowledge that everyone understood that its pre-rehearsed set list and not at random. Though the closest I've seen of people shouting requests is after they did that one time rendition of 'I Like Big Buts' by Sir Mix a Lot, now usually every recital I'm at someone shouts "I LIKE BIG BUTS!, I LIKE BIG BUUUUUUUUUUTS!" Sometimes Melora indulges them depending on the mood she's in. _________________ "I'm the new Jan Brady!" LOL! |

I saw them once, and the crowd was good. We cheered, whistled, etc, after songs and jokes, and during the songs, pretty much everybody was quiet. But there were people drinking and talking at the bar at the back of the venue, so the place wasn't completely quiet for the music, but none of the sound was disruptive. I'd like to think that since they are considered "recitals" the etiquette should be like that of any recital. Sit or stand quietly and listen, and clap or cheer appropriately. I don't quite understand why anybody would mosh to Rasputina. There's much better things to mosh to.
I think Faun Fables got heckled a bit, though. They were the opening band. _________________ )'( |

Very good guidelines if I do say so myself! Luckily, I didn't catch any of the hippie moshers, but I would have to reiterate:
Please listen carefully to Melora's comments between songs. They are all very witty and usually hilarious.

| Never had the fortune to see them live, and since they aren't coming to GA this time around, I doubt I'd see them anytime soon. But I don't like crowds, and thus the boorish behavior of a few might really sour me... at the same time, it would be totally great to see them actually live at some point! |

Moshing is not a good idea. You could get hurt, and you'll miss the recital.
There are PLENTY of bands you could go see and mosh to.
Rasputina is much more unique than them.
If you must shout out, shout out something nice like "I love you rasputina"
no one likes it when their audience is mean. never shout out "You're stupid!"
I'm sure none of the fans here would ever do that but still.

I attended the Milwaukee recital and I have to thank almost everyone. They sat, watched, and clapped all when appropriate. I'm sure there were people in the back talking but that always happens. There was one man who yelled a few things but he quick shut up when Melora made a joke of it. I'll get around to uploading the video eventually... _________________ I might be short & young...but I got spunk! |

I do wish the shows were more lively, like back in the day. Melora was so excited at the Boston show it looked liked she was about to crowd surf but the audience was almost funerial in nature. I think there was a few times she wanted the audience to clap in sync with a few of the high paced songs again the spirit of that audience of the crowd was not entirely encouraging. _________________ "I'm the new Jan Brady!" Between songs, sometimes Tori Amos just sings about near nothingness until the band sets up or just until she's ready to play the next song. During one of these, someone screams "BUTTERFLY!!!!111oneoneone" -- which is a song that casual Tori listeners aren't very aware of -- and she stop singing, tilts her head, and sayssss "Fuck that". lol |

"How do you treat a recital or how do you feel people should act at a recital?"
I wish everybody was quiet last night so i could listen more carefully to what Melora had to say, but... alcohol was served at the location and i wish it were a hash bar instead... If you don't like that then judge me silently and keep it to yourself :^) Yes... I wish it were as quiet as the museum of the paranormal down the street, but it was not that kind of venue.
At one point Melora mentioned the cat calls. There were many noises made by people ranging from xena battlecries to giant cat noises.
I felt bad for the bands that played first and people were rude to, because they wanted rasputina to play. I thought rasputina opened for nirvana before and probably weren't well received at times. I used to like nirvana A LOT and now i like rasputina A LOT more. Anyways i just got home from the recital in seattle and i still have a migraine from when i first got there.. grrrr!1 Oh yeah... the lady selling merchandise said "you suck!!" at the end. Somebody put her on "the list"!!!
PS. Somebody started stomping in the back of the room when melora got out her banjo. They were trying to get it to catch on but it turned out quickly that they were just making loud noise offbeat. _________________ hey diddle diddle the cat and the fiddle the fish ran away with the spoon... and the cow jumped over the moon... years later cow bones were discovered on the surface of the moon by scientists. | I think the Seattle show audience had great etiquette, stomping and making Indian noises and all .. |
